Rafting in Nepal
Rafting has developed within the last 20 years to the extent that it is almost as popular as trekking and many visitors combine a trek with some rafting and/or a visit to Royal Chitwan National Park. No special experience is required for an expedition, and as long as you do not mind doing a bit of paddling and getting a bit wet - or quite possibly very wet! - then you will have an exhilarating time riding the wild, white waters of the Himalayan rivers. Trips usually will last between 3 and 9 days, the rafts are the inflatable rubber type and each will have an experienced helmsman to ensure the raft goes the right way; everyone is provided with buoyancy aids as well, an essential safety feature. Just as in trekking, cooks and helpers travel as well, and each night a quiet campsite is found, maybe on a sandy beach or grassy terrace, with only the murmuring river or the calls of wildlife in the forest to disturb your sleep. The main rivers are the Kali Gandakhi, Trisuli and Sun Kosi, the last two being especially convenient to Kathmandu and all three give plenty of white water excitement! Rivers further west are also being developed, like the Marshyandi, Karnali and Bheri, the latter two giving real wilderness expeditions through country rarely seen by any Westerne.
